Excellent post. The only thing I would add is visiting the scene at the same time of the day as the event in question. For instance, if you are trying a car accident case, the traffic light and patterns may change during the day and being there at the time of the event will help you get a better feel for what the drivers saw. Also, you get a better feel for the influence of the sun / darkness on the drivers. Finally, on a couple of occasions I actually ran into previously unknown witnesses to the event by visiting the scene.

wow really great post, thanks for the insight and direction of the life of a trial lawyer. In the effort of trying to advance on the field for those who don't have a clue I would recommend looking at <a href="http://www.vault.com/wps/portal/usa/companies/rankings?rankingId1=2&rankingId2=-2&rankings=1&rankingYear=2009&regionId=0&showVaultAllRankingPortlet=true&routerSignalFromVaultAllRankingPortlet=false&routerSignalFromViewRankingIndexPage=false&routerControllerName=selectRankingIndividualController" rel="nofollow">top 100 law firm rankings</a> and see if its a field worth getting into.
