Fun with Expert Witnesses

0 Comments 29 January 2007

Do you have any fun with your expert witnesses?  I do.  This week I called a firearms expert to the witness stand.  When I asked him to tell us how he test fires weapons in his lab, he told us that he shoots the firearm into an 8 foot water tank.  He said that no matter how powerful the weapon is, 8 feet of water is more than enough to completely stop the bullet.

I was curious, so I just had to ask: “So you mean that all those movies where the action hero dives underwater to escape from the bullets could actually be true?”  He told us that, yes indeed, if you swam deep enough, the bullets would never reach you.

I thought that was a neat little factoid.  It didn’t make or break my case, it just made the expert (and the expertise) a little more interesting.

How about your case?  Is there something you can do to make your expert more interesting or more engaging?
